Job Description

Responsible for the development and commercialization of products that leverage engineered materials (thermoplastics, thermosets, composites, coatings, metallic alloys, etc.) by our product development teams. These products include: New and revised pipe system joining solutions, materials and components for Victaulic and its subsidiaries. The preferred Project Engineer will have experience in plastic part product design and possess technical knowledge in polymer process and application (injection molding, RTM, RIM, extrusion, compression molding, etc), including awareness of  instrumental analysis of chemicals and polymers (FTIR, DMA, DSC, TGA, Tensile etc).

Product development encompassesinception through steady state production (utilizing a Design Review or phaseddevelopment process), which often includes:

1. Concept generation

2. Specific design ideas to satisfyconcept(s)

3. Presentation and communication ofideas

4. Modeling of concept (via drawingsand/or hardware)

5. Interfacing with Marketing/Salesto refine concept to meet customer requirements

6. Costing of initial design

7. Project and/or procurementauthorization preparation

Facilitating of a multi-departmentalteam (formal or informal) in the Test and Validation of non-metallicsub-assemblies and products from execution of detailed design all the waythrough commercialization including:

1. Formulation of new polymers thatmeet customer's specifications

2. Supplier selection participation(in-house or out)

3. Prototyping

4. Testing against requirements(thermal analysis, mechanical analysis and chemical analysis)

5. Solving design problems

6. Scrutiny and review of detailedcost estimates

7. Leading a design review to assurecustomer and performance requirements

8. Resolving tolerance issues

9. Participation in toolingselection and approval of tooling based on samples

10. Participation in evaluation ofpilot production runs and problem solving

11. Technical literature preparationand approval

12. Education/training about newproduct

Job Requirements


•        BS in Chemical, Materials or PolymerEngineering.  MS in in one of these fields is a plus. 

•        BS, MS in Mechanical Engineeringwith experience in plastics/polymers will be considered.

•        Knowledge of polymeric materialtesting and failure analysis.

•        Thermoplastic and thermosetmaterials knowledge – from commodity grades to complex engineering grades.

•        0-5 yrs Experience in plastics product design, plastics processing, and programmanagement of products made from thermoplastic or thermoset materials.

•        Demonstrated problem solving andanalytical skills to resolve technical issues.

•        Excellent verbal/writtencommunication and presentation skills.

•        Strong computer skills in standardMS Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

•        Experience with Finite ElementAnalysis (FEA) for part optimization with polymer-based products and materialsa plus. Abaqus or Ansys preferred.

•        Experienced in running analysis withMold Flow Insight a plus.
